Northern NSW Square Dance Association Inc.

The Northern New South Wales Square Dance Association Inc. was formed in 1986 with just five country clubs as its first members. The five clubs were from Alstonville, Casino, Grafton, Glen Innes and Armidale. With three clubs on the coast and the other two west of the mountains it was felt that it was time to get together as a group to support each other and to try and promote square dancing in country areas. At this time the majority of square dance clubs were in the Sydney area, as was the governing body, and our country clubs felt very isolated and neglected. And so the NNSWSDA was formed with its main aims being:

1. To give mutual support to each other.
2. To communicate and co-operate when organising events to avoid clash of dates.
3. To help each other promote square dancing in our region.
4. To give our northern country clubs a collective voice with the NSW Square Dance Society (now known as the Square & Round Dance Association of NSW).

Our Association membership covers an area as far north as Newcastle, south to the Queensland border and out west as far as Tamworth. During the past 30 years many new clubs were born throughout our northern region increasing our membership to 20 clubs. Sadly over the past 10-12 years we have seen a large number of our clubs close due to a variety of reasons – decline of new members, natural aging process of dancers, loss of club callers and leaders and even change in the way we choose to socialize with each other these days. Currently, we have 11 clubs still operating throughout our northern area with three of the original clubs still dancing. To keep clubs and dancers informed of forthcoming events, a calendar with all our clubs’ events listed is made up and sent out to everyone at the end of each year. An Association Newsletter is also sent out every 2 months, again keeping clubs and dancers abreast of everything that is happening within our square dancing world.
